What is Shifter Cart Racing?

What do you get when you take a fun center go-cart and mix it with a ’69 Camero SS? You one of the most adrenaline packed motorsports. The sport is called shifter cart racing. The open wheel, light, small, and fast vehicle is the most economic and widely embraced way to get into the world of motorsports.

The shifter karts themselves are amazingly diverse in design and specifications. They can have engines ranging from 60 cc’s to 250 cc’s. A 250 cc engine is the equivalent of a small motorcycle and can puts the kart around the track with 90 hp and at top speeds of 160 miles per hour. This becomes increasingly more extreme once you take into account the carts at a local fun center are only going 15 mph and that the shifter cart has no roll cage like those in larger vehicle motorsports.

The sport is traditionally a stepping stone for young or aspiring drivers. However, as a free-time activity it also can be extremely enjoyable. Some tweaked-out karts can go from 3 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph with the help of an experienced driver. This feat is no task considering the cart usually only weights as much as an average adult male.

The origins of karting can be traced back to a one Art Ingels, who is now refered to as the “father of karting”. He was a race car builder and veteran hot rodder who build the first one in1956 in Southern California.
