Coaching Youth Football - Conducting Tryouts
When Coaching youth football, one of the first orders of business is conducting the tryouts and evaluations of the players that will be split up on the upcoming season.
Many organizations will run the entire tryouts process and leave it up to the coaches to observe and make their own evaluations. It is very important that you know what to look for so when it comes time to draft, you will be selecting the correct players.
If you are Coaching youth football for the first time, you will need a plan of attack. First and foremost, speed is king. You will want to grab the fastest kid available on your first few selections. The only exception to this rule, is the player who is terrified of contact. Speed is king, but if the player is afraid of being hit, do not waste your time drafting him, thinking you will change him. You won’t be able to and now you’ll be stuck with a fast player you cannot use anywhere.
Next, you want to look for physical players. You want players that are not afraid of contact. As you begin Coaching youth football, your task will be challenging enough, so the last thing you need to be concerning yourself with is trying to get the players used to contact. You will need a steady group of players that are not afraid to block and tackle opposing players.
In conclusion, make sure you get the proper evaluation of all the players you a may be drafting, during the tryouts week. You get only one chance, so make the most of it!
