A Little History Regarding 9mm Ammo
When it comes to weapons ammunition, you do not have to be a firearms expert to have heard of 9mm ammunition. Perhaps the biggest reason for that is because it is possibly the most popular form of handgun ammo around today. However, 9mm ammo was not always as popular as it is these days. In fact, there were many perceived disadvantages of this particular ammunition, and even though it has been a part of handgun ammunition for over a century, it was not always the ammunition of choice that it has become today.
The first incarnation of 9mm ammo was actually introduced back in 1902. This particular ammunition was used in the legendary Luger automatic pistol. The rub, at the time, about this particular ammo is when it came to hand gun users it lacked enough stopping power. This was especially true in defensive situations. The only handgun ammunition to have sufficient stopping power was the .45 mm. However, with this ammunition requiring a much larger gun, it made it very impractical for normal handgun use.
This was the situation until the early 1950’s, 1951 to be exact. That is when Colt introduced the Commander pistol, which used 9mm ammo. A few years later in 1954, the popular manufacturer Smith & Wesson came out with the Model 39 semi automatic handgun that also used 9mm ammunition. In addition, thanks to a large demand for military arms immediately following WWII, 9mm ammunition became even more popular. Then the JHP 9mm ammunition was introduced and this allowed for better stopping power as well as an overall increase in performance because of a heaver grain. All those things combined where determining factors in what has made 9mm ammunition the most popular ammunition for police, military and personal use today.
